How to Submit Your Doctor’s Bill for Reimbursement at OGK (Step-by-Step Guide)
If you’re with ÖGK and paid upfront at the doctor, don’t stress — getting your refund is easier than you think (once you know the steps).
Here’s a quick guide based on what I learned!
1. Keep All Your Documents
After your doctor’s appointment, make sure you leave with:
An original invoice (Rechnung) – with your name, the doctor’s details, what services you received, and how much you paid.
Proof of payment – Like a stamped “bezahlt” (paid) note, bank transfer confirmation, or a separate receipt.
Without both, OGK can’t process your refund.
2. Choose How You Want to Submit Your Refund
When you go to the OGK website, you’ll see two options:
Option 1: Alles Online (Everything Online)
You can submit your bill completely online.
BUT you need to have ID Austria (digital identity) to log into their system.
If you have it, it’s super quick — you upload your documents and submit the form digitally.
Submit online here: OGK eServices
Option 2: Fertig Ausdrucken und Per Post Schicken (Print and Send by Post)
If you don’t have ID Austria, no problem!
You can download the reimbursement form (Antrag auf Kostenerstattung), print it, fill it out, and send it by post.
You just attach your original invoice and proof of payment to the printed form.
3. Make a Copy Before Sending
Before sending anything, make a copy of:
Your filled-out form
Your doctor’s invoice
Your payment receipt
Better safe than sorry!
4. Send Everything to OGK
Depending on the method you choose:
Online: Just upload everything through the OGK portal if you have ID Austria.
Post: Mail the form + invoice + proof of payment to your local OGK office.
5. Wait for the Refund
OGK usually processes refunds within 2 to 6 weeks.
The money will be transferred directly to the bank account (IBAN) you provided.
Important:
If you visited a private doctor (Wahlarzt), you’ll get back about 80% of what OGK would have paid a public health insurance doctor (Kassenarzt). So the refund amount might be a little lower than what you actually paid.
Bonus Tip: Bring Your ID!
When I submitted my first bill, they asked for my Austrian ID (Personalausweis).
If you don’t have one, I also wrote a blog post about getting an Austrian ID!
